The Fragrance Garage: Repurposing with Purpose

The Discovery

I paid $7 for this cabinet at Goodwill.

Seven dollars.

It was clear immediately that it was custom handmade. The craftsmanship was intentional. The proportions were thoughtful. The interior was lined with a rich green velvet inlay that hinted at its original purpose.

It appeared to have been constructed for jewelry. There were small nails along the back wall and a few ring holders fixed to the base of one shelf.

It wasn’t damaged.

It was simply unfinished in its next assignment.

Seeing What Others Miss

Most people would have walked past it.

It was dim. Worn. Overlooked.

But design is not about accepting original intention.

It is about recognizing future possibility.

I removed the nails.

I removed the ring holders.

I left the velvet inlay.

Because the inlay was not the problem.

It was the foundation.

Why It Works

The cabinet’s structure already offered what fragrance requires:

Enclosure for preservation
Protection from dust and light
Vertical composition for visual storytelling
A glass door that transforms storage into display

The green velvet interior now serves a new purpose — providing depth and contrast, allowing each fragrance bottle to stand forward instead of disappear.

What once supported jewelry now supports scent.

The Transformation

This is now my fragrance garage.

Each scent has a home.

Each bottle becomes part of a curated visual narrative.

Function and beauty coexist.
