This week we’re laying the foundation—literally. Before a space gets styled, it needs to be planned. Layout and space planning are what turn a house into a home that flows with function, peace, and purpose.

Here’s where interior design meets intention.
No matter the size of your space, applying industry best practices to your layout ensures you’re not just filling a room, but freeing it to serve.
True Design Layout & Space Planning Tips
1. Understand Your Room’s Function
Start with purpose. Is this space for gathering, creating, resting, or working? Design begins with identifying what the room is called to do.

2. Follow Key Clearances
These aren’t just designer rules—they’re based on industry-backed standards that enhance comfort and functionality:
36” minimum for walkways and major circulation zones (aligned with ADA accessibility recommendations).

18” between sofa and coffee table (industry best practice for reach and movement).

30”-36” between dining chairs and walls or furniture (ensures comfortable pull-back space—especially important in homes with children or guests).

42”-48” between kitchen counters and islands (National Kitchen & Bath Association standard for functional flow).

When these clearances are honored, your space not only looks good—it feels right.
3. Apply the Rule of Thirds
Dividing your room into visual thirds helps define zones. Open-concept layouts especially benefit from this: a living area, a dining nook, and a reading or workspace can coexist beautifully when properly zoned.

4. Anchor with Intention
Rugs, artwork, and statement pieces should create grounding points—not visual chaos. Float pieces if necessary, but always with purpose.

5. Balance Scale and Sightlines
Oversized pieces can overwhelm a small space. Design is about proportions—placing your focal points along natural sightlines ensures the space invites, not intimidates.

6. Leave Room for Breath
Don’t pack in more than the space can handle. God can’t pour into clutter. Allow for margin—physically and spiritually.

When clients walk into their newly designed space, I want them to breathe deeper, move easier, and feel a shift. That’s the beauty of layout and space planning done well. It makes room not just for furniture—but for life.
